Re: Uniform

Just wondering if employer is allowed to deduct uniform charges from my first salary? One of my friends told me that her company had also deducted RM50 from her first salary as a deposit for the uniform. She was advised that she may get back the deposit once she resigns and returns the uniform to the company.

It is not uncommon for some companies that require deposit for uniform supplied to the employees as it is quite common for employees not returning the uniform when they resign. Since it is refundable, I think it is not wrong.

Thank you for your reply.
What if it is not refundable? Put it another way, employer does not state clearly on the contract but verbally asks a new employee to buy two sets of uniform before he/she starts working. Is it legal?

That is no good. Then it is up to the employee whether to agree to buy or not. If the employee does not want to buy the company may not want to offer him the job.
