Re: Annual Leave on contract & Public Holidays

I work in a private college & it is stated in the contract that I have 30 days annual leave. Now I am resigning and I'm told by the HR department that academics have no annual leave to offset since we have off-semester periods (although we still come to work). I am also told that public holidays are included in my 30 days leave. Is this in violation of labour law?

Extra info required: 1. what is your salary? 2. when did you join the college?

As you are not covered by the Employment Act, I don't think the Labour Department can be of any help then. I think such matter should be properly clarified should you still be in the same line of business in future. Meanwhile you yourself may have to sort out the problem with the college.

Thanks for the reply. So, what you are saying is that if one is not covered by the Employment Act, the employer can take it that the number of days of annual leave can include public holidays? If so, then workers in this country are treated very badly - they have very limited rights.

They will have to protect themselves by negotiating for better deals. They fight for their rights.
