Re: Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012

There is a new Act prescribing minimum retirement age for employees in the private sectors. Contact the Labour Department about the date the Act will take effect.

Just for general information.

Hi KL Siew

What do you think about the advantages and disadvantages of the Act? I am going to be 60 soon and having been working in X company for nearly 20 years. There was no retirement age requirement in my contract of service. What will be my position in terms of the new law?

Whatever it is, one thing you must be aware: there is no mention of any payment of retirement benefits in the Act. Now employers may be able to retire employees legally, which they were reluctant to do so because of legal implications. Employees might suddenly find themselves out of job and with source of income cut off.
