Re: overtime claim

I'm a college lecturer. my monthly salary is RM4000+ on contract basis.

Recently, the college managed to recruit more students than the existing classrooms can cope with the demand. and such I'm assigned to deliver lectures in the weekday evenings from 5pm to 7pm. my contract stated that my working hours are 9 to 5, and monday to friday.

Can I claim for overtime pay for the evening classes? if so, what is the overtime pay rate per hour? is the labour law applicable?

please advise.

Since your salary is above RM1500 and therefore not covered by the Employment Act. As such, you may have to negotiate with the college about the benefits you mentioned.

thanks for your advice.

the college is now compensating RM50 per OT hour. But I strongly feel that it is insufficient and they are taking advantages over us. this is because very normal lecture for one hour usually require many hours of preparation and administrative works. This rate is also much lower than their offer to those part-timers' hourly rate for normal working hours during weekdays.

Can I just reject the offer and refuse to deliver the OT lectures?

please advise.
