Re: Step child

Hi Mr Siew,

My company provides medical benefits/insurance for employees and families (spouse and child).

If an employee marries a divorcee with a child, should my company cover the medical benefits/insurance of the employee's step child too?

Thanks,
Lina

It depends how the word "child" or "member of family" is defined. Check the insurance policy properly if there is one or consult the insurance company that provides such coverage.

I have checked with the insurance company and according to them, rightfully, the step child should be included since the relationship is through a legal marriage. However, it depends on the company whether or not to allow such inclusion.

Does it mean that company can decide whether to cover the step child or not and they are not obliged to do so if they don't want to?

That can be the case when the terms are not properly defined. Otherwise you may also ask what about adopted child, illegitimate child and so on. Check up the company handbook or policy about such definition if there is one.
